What is a B2C Marketplace?

A B2C Marketplace is a platform where various vendors from different spatial locations enrols themselves to offer their products/services for sale, where admin will earn commission on every product sold thru the marketplace.

How is it differ from a regular E-commerce website?

Though both the solutions are used for selling products online, there are some basic differences between them.

#1 A marketplace is an online platform where the website owner/administrator allows 3rd party sellers to come & sell their products on the platform while an e-commerce website is a single brand online store or multi-brand online store is the one where a specific brand/manufacturer/reseller sells its own products on their website.

#2 The marketplace owner does not own the product inventory which is listed on the portal and neither does he invoice the customer. On the contrary, the inventory in a single brand store is owned by the website owner/administrator only and he directly invoices the customer for their purchased products.

What should I be focusing on when planning to start a B2C marketplace?

Out of all the aspects to be considered before creating a marketplace solution, Technology plays an eminent role in making it a success.

But along with scalable & robust technology, the right blend of sellers & buyers is also very essential to make your estore a success.

I’m listing down a few points for your reference which should be focused upon before you plan your eCommerce solution:

  • Define Products & Categories which you wish to sell– Classification of products & Categories will help you to narrow down your hunt for sellers & enables you to target specific buyers who are looking to buy your products.
  • Encourage the targetted Buyers & Sellers to switch from their traditional operations and migrate to your platform. Basically, give them a know-how of the problem you are trying to solve.
  • Plan your social media presence & activities to convey your message to the right audience. This would compel them to use your offerings.

What are the different Revenue Generating Streams of a B2C marketplace?

Since the marketplace involves a lot of transactions between the buyer, seller and the admin, it is very important to define the expenses that are incurred during the transactions & operations so as to calculate the expenses and earnings.

There are a few options which can be considered as primary options for revenue generation.

  • Commission
  • Advertisements & Featured Listings
  • Subscription Fee (Monthly/Quarterly/Yearly)
  • Listing fees (Fee charged from product listing)

All the above revenue-generating options can be considered before starting with a marketplace, but the commissioning model is the most prevalent.

How do I validate sellers who are selling on my marketplace?

Since the marketplaces are operational PAN India and there is no measure that would guarantee the credibility and trustworthiness of a seller, there’s a step that can help you in initial screening of every seller and can minimise any chances of illegitimate sellers to be active on your marketplace.

During the course of seller registration, you can ask the user to upload his KYC documents which can be verified by the admin to verify the authenticity of the seller before he is taken online.

The required KYC documents vary on the type of company of the registering user:

  • Individual or a Proprietor
  • LLP or a Partnership
  • Private Limited Company

Can I charge variable commissions from different sellers on my marketplace?

The basic revenue generated by a marketplace is thru the percentage commissions which is charged from the seller upon every successful order placed against his listed products.

Every marketplace has its own commission structure which can be applied in 2 ways:

Category Basis: This is a standard commission rate which is defined & charged according to the listed product categories i.e. every listed category might have a different commission rate. This commission is the same for all the seller listed on the portal.

Seller Specific– In some cases, the marketplace wishes to define specific commission against sellers based on their product range, associated brands and capabilities. In such a case, the marketplace admin defines commissions against a seller for all the listed product categories.

The commission rate can be adjusted to a point that the marketplace is still able to make a profit out of it. The admin can increase the commissions as and when required.

How do I classify Promotions & Discounts Coupons?

Promotions refer to the set of activities, which are managed by the marketplace admin in order to attract buyers and to induce them to buy products/services from the marketplace in preference over others. The promotions are auto-applied to the buyer’s cart value as the pre-defined set of conditions is satisfied.

Discounts / Discount Coupons on the other hand refers to the deduction in the usual selling price of a product to attract the  buyers to make more purchases. The discounts are applicable on the products or buyer’s final cart value by entering a specific coupon code.

How does Promotions work on the marketplace?

Unlike Discount Coupons, promotions are auto-applied on the buyer’s cart as and when the pre-defined conditions are satisfied.

The Marketplace can run a variety of promotions for the buyers. Listing a few below:

Free Shipping on minimum Cart Value: With this promotion, the marketplace offers a free shipping to the buyer on his minimum cart value which is pre-defined.

Flat Monetary Discount on Buyer’s First Order: The marketplace in order to attract buyers has an option to offer them flat monetary discounts on their first ever order on the marketplace.

Flat/Percentage Monetary Discount (Time & Date Specific): The marketplace can run time & date specific festive promotions offering flat/percentage monetary discounts on the minimum cart value to the buyers.

How does Discounts work on the marketplace?

Discount Coupons are unique codes that a customer can enter at the checkout and get a discount on their purchase. A discount code can be a combination of letters and/or numbers or a word.

You can also specify the number of times a code can be used, a minimum order amount before the code can be used, the validity period of a coupon and whether the offered discount will be flat or percentage amount.

The admin can create discount coupon codes specific to:

  • Product Categories
  • Brands
  • Seller’s
  • Products

Apart from Discount Coupons & Promotions, are there any other marketing activities that can be done via Marketplace?

Offering Discount Coupons & Online deals are an ideal way to engage buyers on your website and help them overcome any resistance to purchasing your product or service.

Not only these promotions increase your conversion ratio to meet your business goals but also build customer loyalty and increase brand awareness.

The offered solution allows the admin to create and manage time-bound discount coupons for specific product/category/sellers/brands and the best part is, you can even track the usage of created coupon codes as to how many unique users have used the coupon codes, how many times the coupon code has been used, total discounts offered till date using that coupon code and much more.

Other Promotional Engagements which can benefit the marketplace in the long run:

  • Discount Coupons on Listed Products
  • Coupons for Abandoned Carts
  • Refer & Earn Offers
  • Loyalty Points to existing buyers

Offers & Promotions are surely fruitful for converting your browsers into potential buyers.

How does the buying process work?

To ensure that a customer enjoys his shopping experience on the portal, you need to focus on his buying journey. A website owner needs to make sure that the buyer finds the right product with all the correct & detailed information when he visits the website along with easy signup, checkout & payment options.

There are various channels thru which a buyer can land on your website in search of his required products. The rich buying experience allows the buyer to easily find the product and quickly checkout with his shopping cart using easy & safe payment options.

For this, we need to plan the buyer’s journey which enables him to quickly place an order. The various things to keep in mind include-

  • Easy & quick signup option like Guest User Checkouts, Quick Registrations thru Mobile Number & Email Address & via Social media logins (Facebook/Gmail)
  • Easy Payment options

The motive behind creating a smooth buyer’s journey is to uplift his shopping experience and allow him to place an order without stressing him and make him a returning user. Rather than creating lengthy sign-up forms and making due-diligence at every single step, let’s create a buyer’s journey which motivates him to place an order with all handy information.

How does taxation works in B2C Marketplace?

Considering the multiple transactions happening at Buyer’s, Seller’s & at the Marketplace’s Level during the course of an order cycle, there’s a need to understand where the taxes are applicable and who is responsible for paying them.

For Buyers: The product’s selling price is inclusive of all the taxes i.e. the buyer does not need to pay any additional cost over & above the product’s selling price in terms of tax.

For Marketplace: Since the order amount paid by the buyer are received by the marketplace, the marketplace is responsible for deducting the commissions, closing fee, shipping charges & payment processing charges from the total order amount and pay the balance amounts to the sellers.

So the marketplace here is responsible for paying taxes to payment gateway partners and the logistic partners. Also, the marketplace deducts taxes for the services which are offered to the sellers for the final amount.

For Seller: The product sold by the seller is inclusive of taxes. So, the seller pays a tax against the product purchase.

How is buyer notified for an order?

The marketplace has an automated notification system which sends out real-time SMS & Email notification to your buyers upon every action or event that happens in the system. Be it- Buyer registration, order placement, order confirmation, order shipped, order out for delivery, and successful delivery notifications etc.

This real time notification system not only enhances your buyers shopping / delivery tracking experience but also gives them a sense of relief.

Advantages of sending out real time notification are:

  • Built Customer trust
  • Decrease customer support calls.
